Kingman, Arizona is called the "Heart of Historic Route 66" because its downtown sits along the longest remaining stretch of this famous American roadway, making the city a top-rated tourist destination. However, there's much more to love about this northwestern Arizona town on the edge of the Mohave Desert, which is why so many people continue to search for new homes for sale in Kingman.
Named for Lewis Kingman, a civil engineer who worked for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad as a surveyor in the 1880s who helped construct railroad lines in the area, Kingman sits on the edge of the Mohave desert and is the county seat of Mohave County. The city is centrally located at the intersection of Interstate 40 and U.S. 93, about 105 miles to the southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, and approximately 165 miles northwest of Arizona's state capital of Phoenix.
The history of historic Route 66 is displayed at the Route 66 Museum in the Kingman Powerhouse Visitors Center. Local cultural history comes alive at the Mohave Museum of History and Arts. The city's rich railroad history is well-documented at the Kingman Railroad Museum and Locomotive Park, where visitors can view a 1928 steam engine. Just 25 miles west of the city, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, America's largest national recreation area, offers swimming, boating, hiking, cycling, camping, and fishing opportunities. To the east of Kingman is the Hualapai Indian Reservation. Kingman is also home to the main campus of Mohave Community College.
Kingman's economy continues to be driven by tourism, manufacturing, and distribution.
