The history of Defuniak Springs is related to railroad, being established by the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad in 1881. Defuniak Springs is a city situated in Walton County, in the U.S. state of Florida and it benefits from a humid subtropical climate. The access into the city can be achieved using several highways and roads, such as Interstate 10, U.S. Route 90, U.S. Route 331, and State Road 83.
Defuniak Springs also benefits from a small airport; Defuniak Springs Airport. The first census in Defuniak Springs counted 672 people in the year of 1890. In 1930, there were already more than 2,600 inhabitants and after 50 years, in 1980, the population reached the number of 5,560 people. The last census of 2010 counted almost 5,200 residents.
The main attractions of Defuniak Springs include the historic district with old buildings, Lake DeFuniak which is located in the downtown of the community, an old caboose situated outside Walton County Heritage Museum and the home of the 22nd governor of Florida, Sidney Johnston Catts. Another attraction is Walton County Library, which is the oldest library in Florida. The neighborhoods of the city may be explored by visiting the Circle Drive Historic District.
