Swartz Creek is a small suburb of Flint, Michigan, where, according to the city motto, "friendships last forever." This safe, family-friendly city with a quality public school system is known among residents as a quiet, close-knit community. Located in Genesee County, Swartz Creek was incorporated in 1959 from land that was formerly part of Flint Charter Township, Gaines Township, and Clayton Township, but administratively autonomous from all three.
Swartz Creek is a small town, but its convenient location offers easy access to most amenities. It is located just ten miles southeast of Flint's business district. Lansing is a 40-minute drive to the west, and Detroit is just an hour's drive to the south. Swartz Creek represents the kind of small American town where high school football games and other athletic events are common get-togethers. Swartz Creek offers numerous park facilities for its residents with baseball, soccer, and softball fields, basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, and playground equipment. In the winter, sledding and ice skating are available at area parks.
Swartz Creek shares its name with a tributary of the Flint River, which features an east and west branch. Its name comes from the German word Schwarz, meaning "black," referring to the muddy creek water. The 33.9 mile-long creek's east branch originates at several lakes around the Holly State Recreation Area in Holly Township in Oakland County. It flows through several small lakes in Fenton Township, through Mundy Township, and along the west side of Bishop International Airport, where it joins with the west branch of the creek just north of Interstate 69 in the city of Swartz Creek. From there, it continues northeast through the city of Flint and empties into the Flint River.
