The town of Goldsboro came into existence way back in the 1850’s. The name was inspired by a notable railway engineer, Major Matthew T. Goldsborough. History has been relatively smooth and it today has a number of relics from the past listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The most prominent one is the L. D. Giddens and Son Jewelry Store, which is North Carolina’s oldest jewelry store.
History speaks in many languages, and there is enough architectural evidence in town to vindicate this fact. The Borden Manufacturing Company, established in 1892, is massive factory complex with intricate Italianate detailing. With a dash of old-style vibe stands the Odd Fellows Lodge on the busy N John St. It’s designed with Classical Revival and Romanesque style, and its interiors are a bygone beauty from another world. The Oheb Shalom, also built in Romanesque style, is actually the oldest synagogue in the state. You also have the Victorian masterpiece, the Solomon and Henry Weil Houses.
Goldsboro has a number of locations to fall in love with the outdoors. Cliffs of the Neuse State Park is a pleasant place to unwind and relax with your loved ones. The Neuse River passes through this park and provides from awesome places to fish and light a campfire. You can either go for a swim or shoot off for an adventurous trail. You can alternatively drive two hours down the Neuse River to reach the Croatan Game Land, where you meet the Western Coast. Here too, you find a lot of outside activities to spend a lovely weekend. If you are not a big fan of leaving the city, there are two beautiful golf-course, the Three Eagles Golf Course, and the Lane Tree Golf Course, with friendly clubhouses.
Pizza Inn on Ash Street will surely mesmerize you with their out-of-the-world toppings and sauces. Dee’s Diner is a perfect place to change your taste buds to the flavors of the South. Other than these two, N. Centre St. has an array of awesome eateries and cafes serving mouthwatering delicacies. Try out the king of good food, The Laughing Owl. This area is also for window-shopping and picking up things you need. Within a mile radius, you will find a good number of brands jostling for space. You will also find a theater and movie hall that screens the latest Hollywood flicks. The Arts Council of Wayne County regularly showcases a rich collection of local arts and is worth a visit each time there’s an exhibition.
