The name Alexandria calls up the ancient Egyptian city, home of history's greatest library. Alexandria, Ohio, is a little more modest but the name speaks of the original residents' good taste and high degrees of learning.
Alexandria is something of a rural paradise. It is located within the boundaries of Licking County in central Ohio, another interestingly-named place (it was named after its many salt licks), and the closest "city" is Newark, Ohio. Here you will not have traffic, noise, or any other complaint of city life to trouble you. You'll live as previous generations did, in utter simplicity and solitude, relishing the best of life without distractions.
That's not to say modern industry and technology don't touch this little town. Just that their applications may be... well, a little different. In nearby Newark, one of the town's main attractions is a building that appears to be a giant woven market basket, but is in fact simply the Longaberger headquarters. Longaberger wanted a way to advertise the company's ingenuity in creating useful and unforgettable household products and gifts, and it appears they've succeeded. That's just the beginning of the ways this region of central Ohio has found to stand out from the crowd.
It's easy for Alexandria to stand out when it is just so beautiful. While pioneers have been coming to this region for centuries, many of them moved to Dayton, Cincinnati, or Columbus before the advent of industrialization, leaving Alexandria an untouched idyll. Take a daytrip to Dillon State Park, or bring supplies and camp out for an unforgettable night under the stars. This far out in the wild, the stars will be as bright and clear as if you could pick one out of the sky and touch it.
Connected with the state park is the Dillon Wilderness Area. Many think of Ohio as a tame state, but the preserve will shock you with the wildness of its terrain. Here you can see forest scenes not unlike the ones that greeted early Ohio settlers. Be sure to bring a friend or two if you go on a long hike--it's better not to risk being alone when you spot a bear or another predator in the wild. If you're looking for something a little closer to home (and maybe without the risk of bears) the Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve has 958 acres of land for you to explore.
