Van Alstyne is a Texas city in Grayson and Collin Counties. It is part of the Sherman–Denison Metro area, 15 miles from Sherman and McKinney and 28 miles to Denison. It is 45 miles north of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex with easy access to both through the Highway 75 & 5 corridors. The city is popular for its rural, small-town feel, low crime rate, quality schools, and convenient proximity to more urbanized areas. Van Alstyne was originally settled in 1872 because of its proximity to a Houston and Texas Central Railway stop. It is unclear whether the town was named for William A. Van Alstyne, a civil engineer with the railroad, or Marie Van Alstyne, a shareholder in the company. Either way, its connection to the railroad is unquestionable. The town was officially incorporated in 1890. Legend has it that the Outlaw "Bushwhacker Bill" Wilson, who was the inspiration for the Clint Eastwood movie, The Outlaw Josey Wales, was murdered somewhere in the vicinity of Van Alstyne.
