Overall, i had a good experience in terms of build quality and value for money.

This is our 3rd Highland. We built another Highland in 2019 that had severe foundation issues. This house that we built in 2022 was significantly more expensive and we do not feel the construction quality is any different. In fact, there is a HUGE difference in the Highland we built in 2012 which was why we chose them again in 2019. Had we not micromanaged our new build every step of the way, the house would not have turned out as nice as it did. The biggest problem is the subcontractors they use do not do quality work. Lots of issues with cosmetic items (crooked sheetrock, uneven floors, scratches/dents on practically everything new that was installed and several plumbing/electrical issues that WE caught along the way. The Project Manager/builder seemed overwhelmed and would sometimes manage things quickly, while many other times left us hanging and not answering questions. They tried to tell us the long wait time was due to material issues, but that was not the case. The problem was mostly they cannot get good subcontractors to do the work. It is widely known by realtors and other homeowners that this particular neighborhood (Sandbrock Ranch) does not get the "A" list vendors like the more expensive neighborhoods in Prosper, Celina, etc. I would say overall, their new builds do not represent the level of what you see in their model homes. ... We are pleased with the overall results of the long / arduous / frustrating process. Having said that, one major takeaway is this: the outsourcing of the design meeting (IBB) and the electric meeting (InCharge) has had a very negative impact on the timeliness, professionalism, and overall quality of the experience that people have come to know and expect from Highland Homes. It's not the same anymore, unfortunately.

Overall our house is beautiful. Several issues that i need to mention. Building it took a year to finish( delays due to HOA not approving our choices of exterior color of bricks). Safety issues during the actual building of the house such as sheet racks not properly piled and nails lying on the floors. Upon moving in several bathtub faucets are loose and one was actually leaking. Wirings for internet was not working ( was spliced during construction). Doorbell was put to low for cameras to be installed and wires were knicked and touching each other that apparently caused chime box to short circuit and almost causing a fire. Cracks on both 1 car and 2 car garages seem to getting bigger. Home pro security key pad not sensing all the sensors in the house 1 day after it was installed so as of this time we have no security alarm when doors and windows are opened and it takes 1 month to schedule repairs .Jim has been very receptive to all of these issues but for the price of the house most of these issues should not happen in my opinion. I truly wish I could provide a more positive review, however, I think due to the timing of my build/purchase, my Highland experience was less than expected. I was aware of Highland's reputation as a quality builder, positive reviews per research I did, and recommendation from realtor, so I focused on purchasing a Highland home. Due to several issues, I'm running into now, I believe the building of my home was "rushed" and that certain quality control mechanisms were missed. I do attribute some of these issues due to building demand and market conditions during the Q2-Q3'2022 timeframe. However, based on Highland's reputation combined with the price I was paying for the house, I expected a more positive experience. General issues included missed due dates for installations/repairs, lack of proactive notifications and follow up (I usually was reaching out to either the sales team or project coordinator for updates), continued unresolved repair issues. Part of the problem may be due to lack of subcontractor control and volume of business with resources being spread very thin. Unfortunately, I felt I was unnecessarily caught in the middle and that I was not a priority for the team hence the low rating. ... More

Due to delay in construction many of the interior trim materials are water damaged and will need to be replaced. Cabinet work is very poor in quality and workmanship in installation is bad. Numerous issues with doors, and paint and texture on walls. Construction team ran a vehicle into the brick on the side of the garage and the frame is still split. and brickwork is wonky. Door handle on the half bath was reversed. Wrong bathroom fixtures were installed and replacement was so dangerous that we purchased and installed our own due to possible injury to children. So many things still need repair as we closed before all work was completed properly due to rising interest rates. Plumbing failed within 4 weeks of moving in and backed up into the bathrooms. Shane is on top of these things and I will be happier when all of the work is completed, but for the price point on this home, I expected things to be much better.

We purchased a prototype home that was not complete and have been struggling for over 3 months for completion to be achieved on several issues. Everyone we have worked with is very pleasant and well meaning but the process has been much too slow. I doubt that non-prototype homes have experienced anything like this but we are feeling that our issues are low priority!

New house took 15 months to finish. you could say it's normal due to supply chain issue, but then some houses on same street/same builder got finished under 10 months, so not sure what to say. Issues started out from foundation phase, you need watch like a hawk on every step and ask to be corrected, if you dont live nearby, good luck! Not a single time you were contacted and updated about progress, you always had to ask. Lots of quality issues, but so far they were all medium to minor ones, so something you can live by. But no way it was pleasant experience.

I don't know how things are with other builders, but my experience with Highland Homes was okay. I loved working with my sales counselor, who is hands on, attentive to details, and responsive.

Stay involved throughout the build and demand quality work. You will have less issues after you close. Pat in the office was spectacular. She was extremely helpful.

We are disappointed with the house and wish that times were different so we could have bought from a different builder.

Jack and Ken were responsive up until the day I received my keys. After that, I feel like their response to issues became little to non existent. There are things that need to be fixed or addressed. My disappointment grew after they passed over my keys. I submitted my warranty request and hadn’t heard anything regarding the request.

Overall, the house is good from a construction standpoint. However, the painter did a TERRIBLE job, lots of missed spots. Even after pointing out several paint spot and areas of poorly done sheetrock during the final walkthrough, before being told those were “just cosmetic” and made to feel like we were being too picky about walls with giant areas of missing paint and noticeably uneven sheetrock. This is after they tried to sneak in a different countertop and tell me it was the same thing because they couldn’t find the one I ordered. (They did fix this after arguing with me and me calling management.) Also, the cleanup crew did not do a good job at all, with a noticeable layer of dust on the floor, and pencil markings all over the outside. ... More

Finish work and muniltipul other problems found with the house.

The product and floorplans are great, but the contractors repeatedly made mistakes and many did not put much care into their workmanship. Management failed to communicate effectively and oversee the quality of the project, leaving a long list of repairs and fixes that had to be completed post-closing. We had contractors in and out of our house for two months after we moved in, and although everything was made right in the end, it was a very frustrating and inconvenient process. If you build with Highland, visit the site often, and triple check all of the specs. We visited nearly every week and still, items were missed. Take detailed notes about brick and grout colors, and pay attention to tile spacing... and when it comes to baseboards and trim, make sure they don't use MDF. It was the only no cost option we were given, even though they admit there's no good way to install it (nail holes swell preventing you from ever having a smooth surface). ... More

The Highland sales representative was knowledgeable and extremely easy to work with. I believe my project manager made his best effort to handle the many issues that I'm sure are common to a new build but there's a good possibility he was juggling too many things at one time. He probably needs an assistant to keep him on track. He hasn't been great at responding to texts and/or phone calls. I believe he's sincere in his desire to do a good job but I still have some minor things that need addressing. I would recommend Highland Homes but definitely with a word of caution - don't allow issues to slide and hope things will eventually work out in the long run. ... More

I feel like the build was rushed in order to meet the closing date. This allowed for things to be missed and unfinished. I love the Floorplan and the house in general.

The finish work of our home was below par. The building manager did a great job addressing the items. If I could do it over I would not have closed until the majority of the items were corrected.

From the beginning of the process, December 2019, Megan, our sales rep, went above and beyond to answer our questions or concerns that we had. We purchased our property before our section of the neighborhood had been started and before Highland officially started building in the neighborhood so there were growing pains associated with that. The whole process could have been streamlined had we known every option that was available from the start. Throughout the whole process we had to essentially inundate our sales rep with questions about things we could have put in the house, things that are now readily available to all purchases, ie. Black exterior and interior windows. Megan did her best to get our questions answered asap but it seemed like corporate didn't have the answers themselves. Again, Megan went above and beyond and did an amazing job. Overall quality of the house...some aspects are good and others not so much. The trim work around the house is sub par and cheap. The caulking used to seal has already started splitting, seams and taping on the drywall have started splitting, which was explained to us by our construction manager is not covered to have repaired by highland since its from settling. Correction tape and floating issues are covered but not seems in the caulking and nail pops. One of our corners in the kitchen trim is wonky and not plum, neither is the wall. Exterior paint job is spotty and shotty and the trades used throughout the process have zero respectability in their work. Touch up done on trim around the house was not painted properly after repairs were made to it. Stain in the master bathroom tub hasn't been able to be removed. Cracks on the corners of walls, and the list goes on. For a company that I've heard nothing but good things about some of the work quality is lower than builder grade at best. Need to be more attentive to the trades they hire and be on-site more to make sure they're doing their jobs and cleaning up their trash. I should not be finding fragments, large fragments at that, of brick and trash throughout my yard under flower beds and sod. ... More

We were very excited to build with Highland for the 2nd time. We were impressed with the standard features and incentives offered this time around. Once we moved in we started experiencing one problem after another:the a/c drip line wasn’t connected to the drain causing the washing machine to dump an entire load of waste water into the walls. The issue was addressed immediately by the emergency plumber and Sean sent a restoration company to pull baseboards and set fans to dry the walls out. It was an oversight that should have been caught during several different inspections. It was very inconvenient but it was handled as well as it could have been. Then the dryer didn’t work. It turns out the plug was wired 110 instead of 220, which meant holes had to be cut in the walls in the laundry room and bedroom. The garage door opener and plugs suddenly didn’t work, turns out they moved a plug in the garage and didn’t connect all the wires. The garage door doorknob fell off in my hand. We still haven’t gotten the USB plugs, which are a standard feature, installed. One of the bedroom door frame boards has all sorts of chunks and notches taken out and the painters decided to remove the blue tape without fixing it. There was a lot of that from our final walkthrough. There are a many imperfections that weren’t fixed/touched up. It’s unfortunate that there isn’t much pride in workmanship anymore. Be sure to have specific lists and items you wish to discuss with your builder contact before meeting. Spend time doing the walkthroughs and stay positive and appreciative of their time and effort. They are working with big issues related to the virus and the processes involved with getting items addressed in your new home.

They response issue but they don’t solve the problem. And the materials quality are not good.

It took a while to have plumbing issue resolved. Quality is not up to standards, I would expect, as corners were cut. Tile in downstairs bathroom is cracked and hidden in corner, wall to upstairs was poorly batched and noticeable, cheap paint throughout house.
