Don't buy a Highland Home. Just don't do it - if you want to spend nearly a million with someone just get a custom private builder instead. The entire process from start to finish was full of problems over the course of 16 months that it took to build which inevitably also resulted in my mortgage costing almost double what it should have been based on when we started the build... And we even financed through HH loans because we were told we were getting a "deal" - also a huge mistake. If you expect anyone from HH to take accountability for their work and responsibilities, you'll be wildly disappointed. More on that later... The build quality I would rate below acceptable with utterly horrible craftsmanship. The number of times work inside that was "complete" needed to be redone is insane. They source the cheapest, unqualified labor and supplies, then slap an enormous price tag on it because of the "Highland name". But people need to know, at least since 2021, you are NOT getting what you pay for. Not even by a longshot. i.e. Our bathroom vanities are the wrong color, despite numerous efforts to have them correct it, they just told us to accept it as "the batch from manufacturer" - when you pay for a WHITE vanity countertop, it shouldn't be acceptable if it's delivered in PINK, it's actually visibly pink, because the rest of the vanity is clearly painted white. I don't understand how this is debatable. The bathrooms look like cheap motel rooms because of this. The number of corners that aren't straight and actually protruding from the wall at noticable angles, damaged and crooked cabinets, soft-close drawers that literally don't close without being forced after getting stuck. Garbage disposal that broke for no reason after less than a month, poor wiring that trips GFI, broken glass light fixtures, burnt out bulbs, unfinished floors and drywall... The list goes on and on. New construction like these just being built at the expense of the home buyer's sanity, time, money and mental health. We battled everything we could but it shouldn't have to be that way given how much Highland loves to claim they're "the best" - their slogan is "How trust is built" but I can't say I would trust them to even screw in a light bulb at this point. Highland Home Loans - I had to completely micromanage the closing process because they kept giving FALSE information and never paying any attention to details of the documents I already had provided. If you're mortgage company, your customer shouldn't be the one educating you on state laws to follow. They also tried to get personal documents from me through EMAIL. Completely unsecure and I refused to email documents that had my social security number and tons of other data over unsecured email. We finally resolved to using a secure portal which they should have been using in the first place. Additionally they failed to send the mobile notary the day before closing for cosigner in another state, something that they were fully aware needed to happen. Had I not brought up the fact it hadn't been done yet, we wouldn't have even closed on time. Overall, I regret doing business with this company. I've built multiple homes over the last 15 years with various builders and this was my most expensive one, but with the lowest quality I could have ever imagined. Over 3,000 square feet and the only good thing about the house is the layout (save a few poor choices on some doors/corners). ... More

We've now worked with 3 Construction Managers (CM) after firing the first (refusing to work with him) after he lied to us about a sealing issue in our roof that our personally hire inspector found. Our 2nd day in the house we were awakened at 2am to substantial leaking in 2 bathrooms, hallway, walls, roofs, etc. because there was so much water on the ceiling it set off the smoke detectors. Since then, we found out they only used primer w/o a coat of paint on most of the house, we have white paint stains ALL over our house, including all over our brand new (and expensive) woof floors, in additions to nicks and scratches. Dozens of things around the house weren't sealed correctly, if at all. Mirrors were not secured, we have a big dip in our wood floors in the kitchen that they didn't even try to fill in or cover up. They just added the wood planks over the gap and said nothing. There poor landscaping also flooded our front yard garden area, they made changes to the houses layout without even consulting us!! because they "had it when they were a kid". The painted our brick the wrong color, they didn't stain our fence as per our contract. The paint was blotchy, uneven and sparse all over the house. We've been here for 2 months and there literally has not been 1 day when we haven't found something else wrong and the majority of those days we've had workers and CM's in and out of our house to fix things. Except they either don't show up when scheduled, show up randomly unannounced and unplanned, invite themselves over (the CM Clint), they have big packages mailed to our house w/o telling us they're coming, what they are and what they're for and they put them in the middle of our driveway or blocking our front door or in the mud. Speaking of yards, they put a porta-potty in our front yard - yes they put a portable toilet that workers were using in the middle of our front yard. We had to move out a week because they had so much to fix and when we came back less than half of what we were told would be done was done. They lied about replacing drywall in all of the areas effected by our huge leak in the roof and they've had workers come to fix things that either don't show up, don't fix anything, make it worse or fix it but create another problem. And I'm only telling you part of it after 2 months. The biggest slap in the face is that they've offered absolutely nothing for all of the trouble. No upgrades, no discount, not a single thing. Oh but they did give us $200/day for the week we got kicked out of our house that was supposed to cover lodging and food for a family of four - with a 3-yr old and 5-yr old. And boy do they lie. We even have them on tape and video to prove it. My hand is tired, otherwise I could keep adding things for hours and I'm not kidding or exaggerating. So I would say don't use them maybe :) ... More

Almost every issue you could have with a new build. We have had. Having to kick and screen to get issues corrected

I was so excited to have my family's home built by Highland, but the experience just got worse and worse as time passed. About 8 months into build, Highland moved the construction manager working on our home to another site and that's when everything went downhill. The new manager was not responsive to my concerns. Especially in regard to green paint being spilled and splattered all over the first floor of the home. I noticed it the week it happened and reported ASAP. It still sat for months, going ignored; it just seemed really disrespectful to the fact that this was going to be our home and they didn't care to clean it up. I understand accidents happen on construction sites, but it was as if someone took a gallon bucket of paint and threw it from across the room, at the back kitchen wall. To this day, (three months post move-in), we are still finding green paint stains in the wood flooring and on cabinets. In addition to the home completing more than 3 months late, everything wasn't completed by closing; in fact, Highland wanted to push closing because they weren't ready. The house had major issues upon closing and we had to add an addendum to the contract that held Highland responsible for finishing the items they weren't able to, before closing. In addition to this, two-weeks after closing, we had a major flood in the bathroom, which lead us to discover a leak that had been ongoing since before we took possession of the house. This lead to two-weeks of major construction of my octogenarian grandparents' portion of the home. It completely destroyed the floors, walls, etc. While Highland was responsive to the issue, they did not go above and beyond to reconcile this issue that was due to their negligence. There is blue board missing behind tile and it has already sunk-in; we continue to have issues with the irrigation leaking, although we've asked for it to be addressed several times. Bad paint job. Paint/stains all over floors and doors. Garage concrete is completely stained and chipped. Construction did not follow design and preconstruction design notes. Floors lifted by trim. Doors don't close right. Drawers slides are not smooth. I think my expectations were to high choosing Highland, should of known something was off when the sales rep took us to tour a house and they couldn't believe how much trash there was. I do believe more supervision should be done over the construction crew not only in design but in constructability.

Work was very rushed. Very disappointed with the purchase. I'm still dealing with issues on repairs to be completed that should have been done before forcing me to close just to make a year end number. Worst experience I've had ever buying a new home.

Wish our house was built like others. We have major aesthetic brick issues that lingered for months (may to sept) and the construction manager kept on saying it’ll get fixed l. At the 11th hour before closing got rid of all the excess mortar all over our house and ruined the front of the house with excess acid wash. We were put in a hard place bc we had to be out of our old house. The brick is so horrible, and we put eves lights and u can see a wave in all our brick in the front. I would say they are responsive on warranty request, but our house didn’t get the highland quality we thought we were getting and the brick work was the worst I’ve ever seen. ... More

DO NOT buy Highland. I've built 5 homes (KB, Eagle Valley, Meritage, Chesmar, and Highland). Highland Construction/Sales Management Team at Fronterra at WestPointe is by far the worst one. They will not correct poor workmanship unless asked by customer, then will try to convince customer work is within tolerances. Warranty work is nonexistent. Communication is nonexistent. Follow up is nonexistent. Will blatantly lie. I DO NOT recommend purchasing a Highland Home.

As first time home buyers we had an awful experience with Highland Homes Sales Team. Very poor customer service. Both Andrew and CeCe are very untrustworthy and very dishonest. True “Salesman”

We did not have a good experience with sales or project manager. Highland lacks attention to detail. People working on your house don’t even have access to the plans.

Bad quality work no Finishing in work lot of dump in sheetrock ,rough painting in cabinet look cheap

Went through the first walk through, tagged everything we needed them to touch up. Second walk through was a mess, because we had issues with the builders lender we really didn’t have a good final walk through. At this point we just wanted to move in. FYI don’t go with this builders lender. We built our home, started in February finally moved in September. Lender said everything was great we were approved for the whole six months. 3 days before our closing date, they said they couldn’t approve us. For two weeks they told me to pay off certain debts I had. Did everything they asked for at the end still couldn’t. Went with another lender got pre approved in 3 days closed in two weeks. After moving in some of the stuff we tagged for them to fix the first walk through was still there. We thought we could trust the builders. Mostly all the door handles including the front door were loose. Went to the builder to tell them. They gave me a screw driver to go do it my self. I have three months living at my home and I’ve already have had to call my warranty twice to come fix things like, no texture on walls, places they didn’t even paint, huge crack on our cement stair way to the front door. Still haven’t came to fix the rest of the stuff I put on the second order of warranty, and it’s already been a month. Like, the huge crack from one side of the drive way to the other side, one straight line across. I had a guy come fix the stair way to the front door and when my wife showed him the other crack that’s on the drive way. He said that they would probably had to do the whole drive way all over again. No one ever came back. Not worth the pay! The only best thing out of this builder is there sales person that’s at the model home. He has been super helpful to us from the get go and even after I bought the house I’ve called him, because I can’t get a hold of the people that are responsible to fix my issues at my house, he’s always picked up and tried to help me in any way he can. Living in this home issues are so extensive it is easier to just list them by category. The final stages were rushed and thrown together. There is a blatant communication disconnect between management, contractor, vendors and service techs. Hot water: The “contractor crimped the gas line” which ultimately affected us and our neighbors hot water, gas range and stove top. Electrical: Some lights switches were mis-wired, the utility box was filled with wood chips and dust, and when I use the closet plug, it would short out the whole Master bed and bath, tripping the breaker. An exterior lamp, was not properly mounted and needed to be adjusted. One lamp in the media room was missing a bottom plate, after many requests eventually our Contractor provided a whole unit. I had to replace the GFI in our master. Paint: When I wipe an area on the wall too hard, the paint comes off. The doors and windows, have paint was just slapped on. There are drops, drips and splashes throughout the home on our tile floors, windows, light fixtures, fans, door knobs, etc. Hardware, taped to clothes racks, just painted over. Some areas, not painted or caulked at all. Tile: They used the floor tile from our washroom for our Kitchen backsplash! The floor tile is not up to par. There are boot prints, from someone stepping in paint and tracking it through the house. The seal in the kitchen and to our bedrooms, was not complete. We had a cracked tile that I would never have found if not for me fighting off spiders and ants, entering the house through the poorly sealed floor. Cabinets: Our dark colored custom cabinets are ruined. This possibly occurred during install and /or when they removed things to replace the tile and the countertops with the correct ones. A substance on our cabinets, that cannot be wiped off, cleaned off, sanded and painted over. The resolution was to order set of new doors to hopefully camouflage the blemishes in the finish. But Burrows lost track of our order or completely forgot about it. Our contractor wants to come to our house with Burrows and re-re-re-examine the kitchen cabinets and mud room drawer. I informed him that Burrows had been here for over 3 visits, including 2 with the touch up guy and one with 2 gentlemen who took pictures and texted their boss to get approval for replacement doors, which we were told would be here in 2 weeks, 4 weeks ago. They have the specifics on the cabinets, what does a visit do that they could have done, prior to our move in or the many visits in-between? More visits means more exposure to potential COVID-19 infection. Also under-neither and around the cabinets, in the kitchen, the mudroom and the bathrooms are incomplete stain/paint and caulking. Appliances: Gas top Range had no flames. See Hot Water. Faceplate for the microwave keeps coming off. When we first moved in, the dishwasher didn’t work. After many service calls, we requested a replacement. Highland replaced the Dishwasher. It was installed, quickly. The installers wore masks. They were very respectful and mostly efficient. They left copious amounts of water under the sink from the removal of the old dishwasher and installing the new one and didn't give us a heads up, which caused us to think we had flooding under the sink, like our first night in the house. Also the installers tested the dishwasher which was great except, they left the paperwork inside to be washed as well. Thank goodness it was all in plastic. A week or so later, the installers returned fix the microwave trim piece. They found an incorrect sized screw, no screws and a screw that was screwed into a void space, the trim piece is now secure. Doors: The doors were not plumb. Several interior doors had no door pins, the contractor has been able to bring them by when requested and I just hammered them in. A door to the attic space, the pin was not seated properly, after many attempts I was able to hammer that as well. Cleanliness: Our Attic spaces were dirty and needed to be cleaned, builders left old soda cans, filled with soda and a petrified banana. Clint, sent one woman to clean both spaces, above the garage and our upstairs. She did very well, and yet I still found old cans with soda in them, where she could not reach. We shudder at the thought of what could be thrown in the insolation and hidden in the crevices unseen. Pest: We hired pest control. We have had spiders, ants and mosquitos, We also have “Carpet Beetles”. Are the carpet beetles tied to the profound buffoonery we are enduring? I would not go so far as to blame Highland homes for this, but our pest issues have exacerbated and compounded the issues we are dealing with. Especially after finding our attic has been used as a garbage can. Yard: In photographs we noticed, several slates had not been attached, many slates are cracked. The sprinklers that were not working properly, an uneven yard filled with potholes and collected water and, flooding/drainage issue between us and a newly finished home next to us. As of this writing, that issue is still in the progress of being resolved. Missing Window: We discovered, by reviewing our plans Highland Homes missed installing a window in our living room. Highland homes has graciously offered to send a construction crew to fix this. We are extremely reticent to have anymore vendors from Highland near our home, let alone a construction crew due! For 2 months straight we have had people in and out of our house, during a pandemic, The interruptions and the lack of competency has become maddening. Highland Homes has attempted to blame us for their shoddy work, no one signed off on the home they promised to have completed. This is on them. Highland Homes: Great sales, lovely house over all, nice people, ruined by bad vendors, shoddy craftsmanship, a lack of communication and accountability. No experience is 100% perfect but a new home experience shouldn’t be this… ... More

I was disappointed immediately after moving Into our home. Many electrical problems that required me to wait for the tech on multiple days. One day he didn’t even show up. We were told that all appliances were tested. Which would of been impossible because my dishwasher didn’t have power going to it. So a flat out lie. No one inspected the house, or they would have found multiple outlets with no power and the crossed wires in my garage. The home’s media box where the modem and router go are at the furthest point in the house. Sadly we have poor signal because of this. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HOME FROM THEM. ... More

Contractor's building the home abused the cabinets, bath tubs, plumbing and many others fixtures. Roof in the front was not completed properly. Open holes under gables lack proper sealing. Roof leaks in front under eve. Exterior pieces were not completed properly (sealed on exterior properly). Many items identified in final walk through to be completed as part of the sale, remain uncompleted after 2 months. Lack of response by builder to rectify. Hire your own inspector prior to closing for a new home by this builder. Home lacks insulation over rooms in the attic (it is visible). Demand all items be completed before closing! Having purchased several homes in my life, new and used, I have purchased used homes that require less fixing to repair the household than new on this one. ... More

Our home was initially scheduled for completion in March/April. We told them no rush, as May was good with us. They scheduled closing May 30. I emailed more than once to confirm closing date as they appeared behind, mostly due to them stopping work on my home to build their new model (they verbally confirmed this was true.) We pushed closing back one day due to last day of school activities. The day before closing (on the original close date!), we still had a broken window, no fence, a leak in the bathroom, no inspection certificate, and MANY other major issues. They first wanted to do an affidavit for the repairs, but then after not passing inspection had to delay our closing TWO WEEKS. Had we been contingent, we would have lost the house, or been homeless. They acted like it was no big deal. Once we finally closed, we had to chase down keys, and still had a short affidavit. It took them 7 weeks to finish what they promised in 7 days. And we only got it done because we went to social media and got a meeting with the regional. They still don’t care about how much they inconvenienced us, or the HOURS of my time wasted with their contractors after closing. They made MANY mistakes along the way - I still have things that are wrong that I’m choosing to live with because I’m done fighting them. They admitted they didn’t give us their best but made no other amends. It’s been a horrible, stressful process - right in the middle of our family adopting and going through heart surgeries for our new son - and I could never recommend them as a builder. ... More

The building process was a nightmare due to the construction managers that oversee your home build. They had zero concern over quality or workmanship by the contractors and nothing was made right by them. We have built before and never thought it would be this bad. I’m not kidding! By from a different builder!

We’ve bought several new homes in the past 20 years and I must say this is the worst by far in regards to quality, workmanship and service. We selected Highland in Wright’s Landing 50’s based on the advice of our broker and the fact that our last neighborhood in May Valley only had Highland and Village Builder homes - which were of superb quality. The appeal of selecting an employer owned company was also attractive because of the assumed personal attachment to the craftsmanship, quality and details of the finished product. The contractors used in the construction process simply either don’t care or are incompetent or both. Sadly, construction management does little to reinforce these issues. The experience was so disappointing, that the director of construction management for the greater Houston area changed project managers after we closed on the home because of his ineptitude. The second construction manager was much, much better but unfortunately it was too late to change our perception of Highland. It is hard to believe that painters would be sent out 5 times to retouch the same spot on a wall, which is still shoddy. Can you believe that we were told by their electricians that it is acceptable for our lights to dim and flicker when we vacuum or use a blender because this is a byproduct of the house’s energy efficient design? (We were literally told this by Highland electricians two weeks ago). Their main concern was to get us to sign the affidavit, which we begrudgingly did due to the exhaustion from this process. We are embarrassed to tell family and friends that our new home is a Highland product and to tell them the unfinished, sloppy concrete stories (which still exist) or the tacky cabinet and doors finishes issues (which I am looking at now). It’s interesting to note that the sales experience was amazing. This poor rating addresses the pre and post construction process and poor customer service related issues. At this time, we would not recommend Highland to anyone and would welcome a phone call or visit from one of their executives. ... More

From my experience (first and the LAST) with Highland homes is that they used very very cheep materials. we moved in little over a month now, the master bedroom closet where we hang clothes fell off with the metal bar, on the other side the brackets bending down and the wood piece coming off the wall. both garage doors making scary noise when goes up. kitchen entry door from garage always hits the pantry doors, also highland painted the door hinges. first of all I believe using dead cheep materials and poor supervision caused these issues,

The experience was horrible! The quality and lack of carelessness has been the worst. I have bought new houses before and have never experienced this lack quality.

It has been a very disappointing experience. Many issues to fix with the house after moving in. Very poor paint job in some of the rooms, issues with plumbing, the dishwasher wasn't installed properly and leaked on to the floor. The flooring needed replacing after this, but 6 weeks later it still hasn't happened. A light fixture in the kitchen has been broken for 4 months. No replacement in sight. I now dislike my home because of the experience the builder has given me.

I recently purchased a new property from Highland Homes, and I must say, the experience has been extremely disappointing. Here's why: 1. Poor Workmanship: The quality of the construction is far below what one would expect for the price. Numerous issues have arisen, from uneven flooring to poorly finished walls and faulty plumbing. It’s evident that the craftsmanship is subpar. 2. Low Quality Materials: The materials used in the construction of the home are of low quality. Doors, windows, and fixtures all feel cheap and have already begun to show signs of wear and tear within a short period of moving in. 3. High Prices: The cost of the home is exorbitant compared to the quality delivered. You are essentially paying a premium price for what amounts to substandard housing. 4. Poor Responsiveness: Trying to get issues addressed by the builder has been a nightmare. Customer service is unresponsive, and when they do respond, the solutions are either inadequate or delayed significantly. 5. Lack of Trustworthiness: Overall, the experience has left me with a deep sense of mistrust towards Highland Homes. They make grand promises during the sales pitch, but fail to deliver on almost every front. In conclusion, I would not recommend Highland Homes to anyone looking for a new property. It has been an absolute waste of money, and I regret my decision to buy from them. Save yourself the headache and look elsewhere for a more reliable and quality home builder. ... More

Things not completed on time. Poor workmanship. Poor delivery. Poor quality of craftsmanship. Poor commitment to homeowner! No ETA. After 3 months into the home, still have so many issue pending. You have forced me to decide that I don't want to live in this house for longer than I have to. No one even thinks like that for a rental home.

We had great expectations when we initially signed in for Highland homes at Lakewood at Brookhollow, prosper but later our experience with the sales and the builder turned to be the worst. It is unfortunate even after paying such a hefty price for the new home by Highland we had to face such an ordeal and still struggling to get many issues fixed. All the work is contracted and there is no proper inspection of the work post completion by the contractor. House was handed to us with many pending issues. The builder took advantage of the fact that we were not in a position to reschedule the closing and left many open items unaddressed. No proper response even after repeated follow up. No proper information provided. Pragmatic living conditions not taken into consideration. Many upgrades were ignored and we had to specifically point out and get the rework done. Almost 50+ days of closing and we still have many unsolved/unaddressed issues. ... More

I would never buy a Highland home again and would recommend anyone buying a new home to find another builder. The sales team is unresponsive, the Highland lending team (which they incentivize you to use) is incompetent, and the quality of work for the actual house is far less quality than you would expect for paying such a high price. We’ve had multiple things wrong with the house, damage to our personal property, and 2 months in to purchasing the house we still have so many things to fix. I wish we never bought a home from Highland and I will never again.
