The lack of care taken in the build was disappointing compared to the talk up of how great the quality was. The young lady selling the house was very helpful and worked with me and my relator on getting the perfect lot. after that was accomplished I could rarely get in touch with her and she was short and would only communicate with email. I ended up dealing with here associate more and he was extremely helpful and pleasant. after paying for my home I received my keys from the design assistant she was very pleasant and helpful. I have never heard from the young lady that sold me the house? The contract was pleasant to work with. I don't feel he gave me enough information in the design meeting. It has been the first time I have built a house and was unaware of what was considered extras. I have submitted a work order and waiting response week out. I am enjoying my home and I like it. a few thing I would have done differently. I have been a bit disappointed for the value. We had several issues that stemmed from a lack of communication from the design side, like door trim that has known issues with the doorknob hardware, a kitchen island that was both more expensive and not what we we told we were ordering, and options like pre-sealed grout that we only learned about after the fact. That coupled with some issues like, tile needing to be regrouted because it was done poorly, and flooring being stained by banister varnish, left us feeling frustrated by the process overall. We understand that our home was built during the covid pandemic, and we always tried to be patient and understanding, but a lot of the work felt rushed, poorly done, or needed to be redone. This is our third new home buying experience and overall it was not a great one. We had a closing date that was moved, we a an fairly significant closing addendum for items that were still not finished at the time of our new closing date. We are still working on getting a few of those items done almost two months after close. The home itself is beautiful, but there is some question about the quality of the build and what we cannot see or what may come up in the future.

Home buyers need to follow up closely during the process or get a third party inspector because a lot of mistakes happen.

Quality of materials and work of subcontractors is atrocious.

Level of work poorly done. Contractor would reply in timely manner when contacted. Sales person and contractor both lied that the home will not have a driveway with an incline. Being disabled makes it difficult to climb on slope from sidewalk to the home. I am very unhappy with the work done and selling as soon as I have some equity accrued.

on your walk through "BEFORE" closing make sure everything is looked at even molding and seams on the wall. Check EVERYTHING and document it and have it done if possible before you close.

Meets code, but certainly doesn't exceed. Low quality fixtures and paint. Very nice friendly folks

Easy to work with during building process

Quality promised was not present after closing. I am not happy & I should be.

We purchased a Highland home in April of this year and have had multiple issues. One of the main issues was our granite kitchen countertop had a crack that ran from one side to the other and our previous construction mgr didn't want to replace it and kept telling us it was a natural fissure which it was not. We had to go to his boss to get this resolved and it took several weeks but they finally replaced it 2 weeks after we moved in. We did our 10 day walk through before our closing day and marked multiple issues that needed to be fixed. Several of these issues were not addressed and we had to deal with them AFTER we moved in. Our home was 90% complete that day we moved in and had to have multiple people come over weeks after to fix all of the unfinished/improperly done items. The people that we dealt with @ Highland are hard to get a hold of and not very responsive or communicative. The sales person disappeared as soon as everything was signed on the dotted line and money was funded. He knew how many issues we were having and has not once called or checked in to see how our experience has been. I have reached out several times, no response. Pretty much after 4/5 pm, you can't get a hold of anyone and they won't even text you back. We had to constantly reach out to them to get any response and to get anything done. It has been 7 weeks since we moved in and the last item is finally getting resolved on our home. We looked at multiple home builders and we went with Highland based on their reputation and reviews. This has not been a great experience for us as first time home buyers. They build a nice home and it is laid out really well but all of the issues we have had along with the communication issues has really darkened our experience with Highland Homes. ... More

We just really like the models , no coality, cheap stuff.

This is the first new home we have bought and am happy to have done this but there are many things that I wish I knew. First off, if you are buying a semi custom home from Highland do not expect custom quality. It was clearly explained to me by my construction manager (Don) that these are production homes and not to expect the same quality as a fully custom home. This really irritated me and showed the lack of pride of the employee and their management have in their workmanship. It seems like the sub contractors are lowest bid contractors and as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Every single home on our street has issues and while Highland is getting to fix things, it is not quick, and done at the convenience of Highland, I fixed many things that needed to be done but waiting on Highland would have meant we would still be waiting. This is really a shame because from looking into Highland, they have a great reputation and I was expecting a better experience. Don’t get me wrong, we love our home, but all the little things sure do add up and have soured me. I think they can provide a good home, just be prepared to really look at everything when you move in to make sure any issues are written down and fixed before you sign off. ... More

The sales component was very friendly and helpful. The quality after has left much to be desired. Needed assistance has been difficult to obtain. Things stated as taken care of were not, quality of repairs provided have been substandard and support as well. The list is to long to discuss here.

We bougth our dream house , but we have many problem with plumbing ( toilet) paint , door , landscaping cabinet etc . They sell us a lambo and receive a focus , It not fair , we are very frustrated , we not recommend this builder company at all .

Would hesitate to recommend this builder

The current market has allowed even the top builders to do the minimum because there is a line of people to buy the homes. We had an average experience with a builder that I went into with high expectations based on family in real estate and being a long time resident of DFW. If Highland is now ok I would hate to experience the builders that don't have the best reputations.

We still have outstanding items that need to be fixed. The laminate floor People blamed the floor issues on the carpet people and dull have not fixed my floor. A big hole was in the soffit. They came by and replaced the wood without painting it. Water was dripping through our room AC vent during the Freeze. Technician found no issues. Sprinkler system hasn’t worked since Freeze. Cabinet work had not been completed. Etcetera!!!

Our home is beautiful, but over priced for what you get. Highland still has not completed their final punch list of items that were to be completed prior to move in. We did not want to push our closing date as we had nowhere to go, so we went ahead and moved in. Now we have a list of unfinished items, which they promised they would come finish shortly after we moved in, but haven’t. We have reached out to the builder multiple times, no return calls, no return emails, one time he put a meeting on the calendar and we took off of work for him to no show. It’s funny how once they get their money, it’s no longer their problem anymore. Don’t get me wrong we like our home, but be prepared to chase your builder down if you want them to complete anything they “promised”. ... More

This was a tough situation Covid and weather made things go slower than normal. On one hand they were very responsive to making upgrades, changes and things that we were paying for. We did need to rush into the house a little sooner than normal due to the lease we had expiring so there were some touch of things that needed to be done and that is acceptable. The biggest negative I have is with the yard. The sod was dormmate when it was laid down and then the weather hit. It is starting to come around but there are large patches with no grass. Second the irrigation people didn't level back out the yard and there is a valley in the back where water sits and the grass won't grow. I went and bought sod and dirt to try and fix and reached out to the builder. Someone is supposed to come address but noting so far. The one side of the house has standing water always several inches deep and needs a french drain installed. The builder said this will be addressed but still noting back. The last thing is the fact that the builders just buried trash all in the yard. I am finding pieces of wood, plastic fencing, plastic lids an inch below the surface or in the flower beds. I am afraid to pull it up because I will leave a large hole in the yard and tear up what grass I have. ... More

There’s a massive lack of detail with highland homes. Maybe it was just our experience though? We had three different building supervisors, I don’t know maybe they just didn’t care. I can walk into any room in my house and find a handful of things that are wrong. On top of that, there are a lot of things that just look sloppy. No attention to detail, they just threw everything up as fast as possible and there was no supervisor watching. For the amount of money we paid and the quality of work performed, not impressed.

My home buying experience with Highland is a mixed review. From a floor plan/neighborhood perspective they have very nice floor plan options that are in very nice areas. My sales manager, Sarah T., was fantastic! She was very honest about answering questions and extremely responsive. She walked through each phase step by step. Without a doubt she was what sold me on building with highland and making my experience pleasant. I also appreciated my lending team and my design center consultant. When it came to the project mgmt/construction side - things unfortunately were not as smooth. I assume things in Covid added a layer of complexity in terms of materials and timing, but that should not have an impact on the quality and finishes on the home. When it came time for final walk throughs and closing my home was "finished" with lots of missed items which proved a lack of quality assurance (cracked windows, screws missing from glass door, damaged tile, bathroom drains filled with corrosion, messy cocking, VERY THIN flat standard paint which comes off EXTREMELY easy, etc.). Also there were A LOT of construction remnants left for me to clean and fix in a brand-new house which I feel is unacceptable (I.e. paint spots on floors, pencil markings on the tiles, base boards not flush to the end of the wall, windows not clean, dust on counters, paint/cocking all over most light switches door knobs, and more). My project mgr was responsive but I feel it was hard for my points to be fully understood and made priority. Highland makes a beautiful - I have toured several model and completed inventory homes to confidently say this. What I would say for new buyers is stay on the project mgmt side and ensure they are doing what they should be in terns of finishes. Sales process was professional. Massive problems with issues reported before closing - still not taking care off. Too many times we had invest our time for issues and no results. Simple things (i.e. shoe mold in kitchen) is still not taken care off. No communication from Building Manager. Very frustrating. More and more smaller problems occur and NO action after reporting.

Workmanship is crap. The painters suck. My 9 year old daughter could do a better job. The trim used inside is crap. MDF garbage For a 500k + house I guess I thought it would be better.

The sales reps Thea and Patti were great. They made our home buying process go very smoothly and made us feel very comfortable. Once we moved into the house we found that fans in the ceilings of the bathrooms were not screwed in, vanity lights were screwed into the dry wall instead of something secure, the base boards and door frames are very cheap material and will not last very long. Grout work on the tiles was done very sloppy. The backyards were not leveled out and barely any dirt was put down under the grass. Seems that the individual in charge should have been walking through the homes more often to ensure the workers were doing a good job. Seems as though some of the people working on the homes are not qualified and don't know exactly how to do their jobs. We found a lot of alcohol bottles in the home when being built so these workers are drinking on the job. We paid extra to buy the lots looking at the greenbelt but the workers threw a ton of trash in the greenbelt. We asked for the builder to clean that up but got no response. These homes are close to the 1 million dollar price tag and we expect good quality materials and better workmanship. Overall for the price we paid we were disappointed in the quality of work that was done in the house. When you are building homes in this price range you should have more oversight on the work being done and use quality materials if that is what you are charging. ... More
