Continuous struggle through the whole process

Not the best experience when building a new house - our builder did not respond promptly to our issues/concerns, and he became defensive when we pointed out issues and/or concerns. We are moved in and continue to deal with issues that should have been resolved prior to closing.

My experience hasn’t been good. I choose Highland because of their reputation, however they have NOT stood up to their name. There has been many errors and oversights throughout the entire process from incorrect ceiling heights, bathroom flooding, missing lights, texturing, painting etc., corrects are still being made which is NOT good howbeit some major and some minor. The contractors Do Not take pride or care in their work, their craftsmanship is poor which makes for a poor quality home. Maybe the more expensive lots have better builders and contractors but my experience has been awful. Maybe I had too much expectations with highland home. I had so much issues that needed to be redone like the driveway painting the cabinets I have installed has a huge gap and they are telling that is how it will stay. Now I have drainage issue. For a new house the issues are just a lot.

The house is beautiful but I've got tons of documentation that shows what looks like a house that was rushed and unfinished. There's holes in the mortar of the brick, plumbing fixtures falling out of the wall, above my cabinetry there's wood and screws and plastic tossed everywhere, my lights didn't work in the front of my home, I had to recalibrate my HVAC unit because it wasn't installed properly (per the tech's input), I had an entire sprinkler sector in the front not working at all, I've had holes in walls where plumbing runs into the wall, my wood floor vinyl started peeling up, I've had one door knob fall off completely off the door, and the majority of the door knobs came loose 1 month after moving in. I want to say good things but with so many issues with a brand new home it makes me wonder if there's proper quality assurance being done. Moved in my house April 28th there were still a few issues that had been blue taped. I brought this to the builder attention and it was suppose to get repaired. It is now almost August and I have been given the run around. I have contacted the builder multiple times who tells me he will reach out to the flooring company and call me back and then I never hear from him. The flooring company calls and gives me the run around and now I’m stuck with a chipped tile that was that was suppose to be repaired. My bricks and mortar are starting to crack and chip. My baseboards shred super easily I think the material used is cheap. My house is so beautiful but there are some issues that I have had in the process. ... More

Cabinet person had and awful disrespectful attitude

Poor service. Poor workmanship. Not a pleasant experience.

Overall I am happy with my Highland Home. However, the whole process of building the home was disappointing and unorganized. There were several things in the house that were installed wrong and took a lot of effort and time to get fixed. I realized this was an imperfect process but the amount of issues that arose throughout the build (which usually were caught by my dad who is an architect and not the contractor) made me feel like I was getting taken advantage of. As this is my first home, I was extremely excited to get my keys and officially be a homeowner! However, when I moved into my home, someone had locked my thermostat at 80 which was not fun moving in the middle of July in Texas. Since my contractor was out of the office, my thermostat remained locked for days. Again, I was left feeling under valued. I will say, Tracy, from the sales office completely made my experience. She made my first home buying experience special and made me feel valued for my business. She was actually the one who came to the rescue when my thermostat was locked. She went above and beyond and was taking on roles that were not hers...she is fantastic! ... More

We had to constantly point-out quality concerns and errors made by subcontractors during construction. Highland Homes agreed to fix everything, but we’re still waiting for some items that were on our closing affidavit to be completed from 2-months ago. This is our second home with Highland. I would not build another home with them.

First off, the sales Experience was TERRIBLE. I was all about what they couldn't do, and there was ZERO follow-through after close from my sales "professional". Secondly, Highland was NOT ready to close on this house when promised. There were so many issues at the time trying to close, many defects, cosmetic issues and functional problems. It took 17 months to complete the build (it was NOT delayed by supply chain), and we had to find other living arrangements during that time. Just simple things like cleaning the yard after close from construction debris was a chore and hard task for the builder after many complaint attempts. Painter's work was the worst I've seen in several houses. There was little follow-up on items that were mentioned, and several re-mentions and attempts had to be done to get things complete. The subs completing the house were clearly very underqualified to perform their tasks. It was really a sad experience all around. ... More

While we are happy with our purchase, there were many issues that will prevent me from recommending Highland Homes. The experience I had heard about from various people that have built homes before, was not one that I can say I have had. My situation is unique in that we relocated from NJ and purchased not one but two homes with Highland. Responses I received from home office were unacceptable and that is when I actually got a response at all. I have some instances where I have not received so much as an acknowledgment on my concerns. I also do not like dealing with a company that finds it necessary to bad mouth competitors when Highland, from what I hear is a very well known and reputable company. We understood early issues with the supply chain, but two months after moving in and our home is still not complete. Despite the builders having our list from BEFORE closing, we are still fighting to get our home done. Every time we talk to someone about getting it done, we are told workers will be here on whatever day… so my wife stays home all day and no one shows up and our calls get ignored. Don’t close before every tiny thing is done. Or choose more responsive builders. They will promise you the world, but you shouldn’t believe it until you see it. When we went to the model home to see the assorted options for what was standard and what was an upgrade, we were told granite on the countertops and island was a standard feature. What we got was quarts. I did not like the quality of the building material, nor the workmanship. When inquiring about the quality of the material, we were told it was standard quality material. My thoughts are just because something is standard for the industry; it should not mean it is also the standards for Highland Homes. Prior to closing, our home was supposed to be cleaned; it was not. However, I must say every time we reached out to the builder/project manager he answered every call. Overall, I think the value for the price I paid versus the final product is overvalued. ... More

Had to battle to get boulders installed for over a month because the contractors were running over my yard weekly. Home pro installed the clare smart system that hasn't worked right in the 3 months I have lived here. They are currently scheduled to come out for the 3rd time. If they cant fix it this time I'm at the point of asking for it be removed and to be reimbursed. A lot of small things that if done right the first time I wouldn't of had to spend my time off/while working making calls, scheduling, or waiting around for contractors to no show to get this or that fixed. Our house has had a large amount of issues during the building stage. We’ve mentioned them and some we were told they’d get fixed but never did. Now I’m dealing with a vinyl floor that is completely coming off.

Highland designs a beautiful house, but they can't finish it with quality. No attention to detail, no pride in the finished product, and every time an issue was corrected, something else was damaged. Their painters should never be allowed to paint a Highland Home again. The employees are very nice, but their job is 10x's harder because of the subpar trades. Options are WAY over priced and they missed our estimated closing date by 3+ months. They can only blame COVID so many times before it just becomes poor planning and execution on their part.

It was really great experience working with sales team while building my home. They were very cooperative throughout the process. Though there were minor issues closing done with the trust to complete rest within couple of weeks or so. But its almost 2 months and i have to chase down builder to get things done. I did not move in until 1.5 months post closing and already seen wood flooring sliding, cabinets paint rushed, bay window sitting area having no support so cracking, garage entry door making noise etc and broken window nets from day 1. Have had new build homes from Landon and Megatel in the past but never had this experience. It's frustrating to see these issues as soon as you move in and speaks for quality. ... More

STAY AWAY!!!! Terrible quality and items will not be completed with warranty.

From the job site constantly looking like a landfill and there never being less than a dozen empty beer bottles and / or cans inside the house alone to the shoddy workmanship of every facet of the construction of the home and Construction Managers being forced to close on homes that are not even ready, this has been one of the worst experiences of our life. We have been in our home for 2 months and we’re still trying to get the original punch list items completed. The longer we live in the house, the more things wrong we find. Every contractor sent out to repair something damages at least 2 other things that, then, need to be repaired. It’s a never-ending circus. Even at this point, if we could get our money back and walk away, we would do it without hesitation. We picked Highland because of the reputation for quality. That is a thing of the past. Don’t be mistaken by the quality of the model homes. Your home won’t look like that. Just like pictures on a fast food menu. Contractors take zero pride in their work and display absolutely no common sense whatsoever. A pre-owned home would take less work to make right than this brand new home is taking. Instead of being happy that, after an 8-month wait to move into our beautiful, brand new home and being able to settle in and get on with a normal life, we’re disappointed beyond belief at the entire process and, almost can’t stand the house now because it is nothing but a source of never-ending stress. Our closing date was pushed by a month. When we moved in, there were tons of items that needed to be fixed. It's been almost 2 months we have moved in and there is always something to fix.

Since moving in, I have had issues with electrical components such as the dryer outlet and breakers. I have submitted multiple requests to apply my warranty on these issues, but I have not received assistance. This has not been an enjoyable experience.

First 2 weeks had good response as to items that need attention. The last 6 weeks response was good from contractors that Highland Homes contacted, but not from Highland Homes as to items that would be handled directly by Highland Homes.

Not off to a good start...

I paid the full price for the home, including all items that were supposed to be included in the price. However, many things were not installed, such as fans and lights. The fence planning was completely mishandled, and the retaining wall was either not built or left incomplete. Additionally, I found several issues with the AC, drainage, tiles, doors, and more. I'm very dissatisfied with the price, especially since it's over $100k higher than homes in other communities built by the same builder within Dallas city.
