Highland Homes builds beautiful homes. Workmanship issues with various crews and insufficient quality control resulted in many issues. However, Highland Homes does attempt to resolve the issues. The process is slow but steady.

Lot unfinished work need to be done. T Jet tub not working.

So many things still need repair as we closed before all work was completed properly due to rising interest rates. Plumbing failed within 4 weeks of moving in and backed up into the bathrooms. Shane is on top of these things and I will be happier when all of the work is completed, but for the price point on this home, I expected things to be much better.

I don't know how things are with other builders, but my experience with Highland Homes was okay. I loved working with my sales counselor, who is hands on, attentive to details, and responsive.

We are disappointed with the house and wish that times were different so we could have bought from a different builder.

The finish work of our home was below par. The building manager did a great job addressing the items. If I could do it over I would not have closed until the majority of the items were corrected.

Sales person was rude and aggressive & loan office wasn’t good at communicating

Builder made promises at the time of closing that they have not fulfilled close to 3 months after closing. Bathroom cabinets are broken, missing fixtures, unpainted items, etc.

I purchased a speck home that was already designed. Color scheme chose was pretty. Disappointed in a lot of the workman ship in the home however.

But because of the home being built so quickly, there were many things that were overlooked. Our two main upgrades (Lot size & master shower) were not completed to our liking and we are still resolving these issues. Also the sprinkler system was set up prior to moving in and it was set to run three times a day, every day and our first water bill was almost $900. It would have been nice to know that issue before moving in. Very frustrating!

Highland Floor Plans are amazing! That being said the experience and attention to detail in workmanship was not as expected. Small things here and there to be finished is to be expected after closing on new construction. Having to call back because workmanship is sloppy should not happen. Pointing out issue with work performed and being told it will be fixed because I don't like it when in actuality the work should be re-accomplished because it was poorly done is ridiculous. We are not too happy in the beginning when we looked at purchasing our home from highlns. The problem is that I believe this was a bit oversold in terms of trying to get us in the home. We initially made contact with a salesperson back in April 2019 and was told the home we were purchasing would be completed in late July. It was a play on the excitement in our eyes to have something ready shorty after arriving in San Antonio. Well to our surprise and without any delays that were mentioned to us... the home wasn't completed until late August. Meeting with the program manager and conversations with the Sales Manager seemed to be working in our favor, but it was frustrating. We were frustrated with not getting information, timelines and the changes in construction manager. The next constructions manager was better at responding. It was almost like the salesperson knew we were in a rush and we had to contact lead Program Managers/Constructions Managers all the time just to get updates. And the problem with that was contacting the office in the local area. I had to call the office in another city just to get through to the team in San Antonio. I called an office in Dallas to get transferred to the main officer here in San Antonio. There was little communication and finally we were able to get information on when the home would be completed and ready to move in. It was a rough few months especially with our daughter in the NICU for a few months.. and as we were not in the area to check in at times on top of having a newborn without a place to live was really frustrating. I know that we were upfront with letting the salesperson know that we would be in San Antonio the first week of July. I know that we mentioned that we wanted the tub a certain way. I know that we had GREAT communication with our realtor, but it appeared that the only people not responding to our questions or not listening were the team at highland homes. We frequented the property when we arrived and found a few areas of concern which we were told that would be addressed and taken care of as soon as possible. A new salesperson who was only here temporarily was very knowledgable about everything Highland and we so wish that we would have had her initially. This was a rush of emotion and frustration that would have been a lot easier had there been some clear communication from team Highland. Im that we initially trusted Highland homes to the fullest extent. The lack of communication and with the salesperson telling us this home would be completed in July kinda made it hard to ensure out needs were met and questions were answered. Very poor experience during the home building and buying process. This was our 5th new construction home so we knew it was going to be rough but could never have expected it to be as bad as it was. Everything on this home had to be done twice basically because people weren't help accountable (the brick even had to be torn down and new brick installed - windows wrong color - wrong fireplace etc.), construction quality was extremely poor for this price point (closed over two months ago and still don't have everything complete - CM is great, things just move extremely slow), paid extra for upgrades that were never done (still working to get it resolved). For example, I paid to upgrade bathroom fixtures and they just installed the cheaper ones and never said anything. I questioned them on it and it is still not resolved (said a back-order issue but this was in my change orders at the design center from a year prior to construction). Highlands was highly recommended to us. But the workmanship was not close to what we saw in model home or website.

We just really like the models , no coality, cheap stuff.

The sales reps Thea and Patti were great. They made our home buying process go very smoothly and made us feel very comfortable. Once we moved into the house we found that fans in the ceilings of the bathrooms were not screwed in, vanity lights were screwed into the dry wall instead of something secure, the base boards and door frames are very cheap material and will not last very long. Grout work on the tiles was done very sloppy. The backyards were not leveled out and barely any dirt was put down under the grass. Seems that the individual in charge should have been walking through the homes more often to ensure the workers were doing a good job. Seems as though some of the people working on the homes are not qualified and don't know exactly how to do their jobs. We found a lot of alcohol bottles in the home when being built so these workers are drinking on the job. We paid extra to buy the lots looking at the greenbelt but the workers threw a ton of trash in the greenbelt. We asked for the builder to clean that up but got no response. These homes are close to the 1 million dollar price tag and we expect good quality materials and better workmanship. Overall for the price we paid we were disappointed in the quality of work that was done in the house. When you are building homes in this price range you should have more oversight on the work being done and use quality materials if that is what you are charging. ... More

There was lack of supervision during the entire build process. Corrective action were poor. We were pushed to close even without things being completed. I have broke water lines in the sprinkler system. I had expressed concern about leaks in the sprinkler system before close and I was told they were fixed. First water bill was extremely high and I am still waiting for the lines to be fixed and outcome of the water bill reimbursement.

The quality of products and material used in a 735K home is poor. The floor is painful to walk on due to no padding under wood and low grade padding under carpet. Wall finish is matte. Shower marble tile was not even attempted to look cohesive.

I bought the model home that was 6 years old. I was told that I had a warranty. NEVER NEVER did they tell me differently. I have an issue with the refrigerator that came with the house. I asked about putting in a warranty and was told then that there was NO ONE YEAR warranty on the home. I was told that they GAVE me money back to buy a 3rd party home owners insurance. The paperwork I saw, after closing, seemed to say that highland homes was paying for the insurance. Been informed now that that's now how they understood it. Bottom line, it's a very nice home BUT Highland Homes was NOT open and honest with me about this. I trusted and believe them when they told me that I had a warranty. We love the layout and floor plan, however, that is the extent of our happiness. For the most part, every sales rep and/or project manager or superintendent was pleasant to work with, but the follow through was lacking. The quality of workmanship and materials was abysmal, not something worthy of aligning itself the reputation Highland Homes has come to have over the years. Simply put, anyone on the executive leadership team would be disappointed...except for maybe the person trying to cut costs or save a dollar, it shows with the contractors working in this subdivision. In some aspects, we are heavily using the 1 year warranty to get things right, in other aspects we are doing it ourselves because we take pride in our work and attention to detail is of the utmost importance. We are happy to be in our new home. Sales process was great. However, post-close, things are less than desirable. More than two months after closing, original punch list is still not complete. There is little to no communication and no sense of urgency. Hate to complain on social media, but hoping this will get someone’s attention that can take care of the punch list.

I am reasonably disappointed with our home. I DO NOT think we got what we paid for. I have owned a number of homes over the years, several of them were new construction homes like this one. While this one was the most expensive by double, it was the least well constructed. Too many cost-cutting measures. As an example, for a home that cost over $750,000, EVERY home on our block has the exact same outdoor fixtures (excluding doors which are an option). The master bedroom closet is well appointed but the poles that hold hangers are extremely cheap and skinny 3/4 inch diameter instead of 1-1/2 inch wood poles as would be expected in a home of this price. It appears that subcontractors are either required or encouraged to slap their parts of the house together as quickly and cheaply as they can, and then they ARE PAID to come back and fix mistakes later. Tell me how this doesn't always end in the subcontractor being financially encouraged to screw up. We had to have nearly the entire roof replaced prior to closing due to just this kind of effort. The home is turned over to you in a manner described by the supervisor as "Contractor Clean" (His words and this was related to me by my neighbors as well). I would not want to live in a home with a contractor if this is the case. Just cleaning my floors required 4-5 hours with a Swifter and an entire box of Swifter pads. It was filthy. One of the guest bathroom tubs had a dent with rust in it prior to mounting COMPLETELY installed with tile around it so of course when shown prior to closing, all of the tile had to be removed in order to replace it. Two months after closing, we are still having to get things repaired not because they have failed, but simply because they were allowed to be left uncorrected. Outdoor fence was installed with only one nail on each support, randomly placed and disrepair a guaranteed occurrence with the first wind. I have never, ever had a home this poorly constructed. EVER. To their credit, the sales rep and the construction supervisor have a positive attitude and do make the effort to assist us but the people who make decisions over this process are clearly overpaid and underqualified. ... Our home was rushed to close. The day of closing it was not complete and we were promised it would be that day. Shame on us for trusting. We expected outstanding quality with highland homes, we did not get that quality. Everywhere I look I see a rushed home build. So disappointing.

Maybe expectations were too high. But for the amount of money spent on this house, I would have expected a MUCH higher level of craftsmanship in details. Base materials that the builder uses are lower quality (cheap doors, basic light fixtures, flimsy wood flooring, counter materials in kitchen and bathroom, little toilets, light switch locations, etc.). Maybe the "area" commanded such a price, but the end product was mildly disappointing. By the end, it was too late to correct it all. The construction manager was responsive during final walk through but not entirely reactive to make corrections. There was only so much anyone could do at that point without making the product worse. By the end you are committed, your heart is set on the location, and your mind is excited for a new home. Turning back is nearly impossible. Short of a daily inspection of contractors, how can one possibly keep up with and correct issues in real time. Everyday I find things in the house that are disappointing. There’s too much to negative items to list on this second Highland home purchase. I’d like to highlight that there are still items that are not repaired or replaced. Craftsmanship and quality control lack in this caliber of home. Professionalism lacks from the sales agent of which we never met or greeted by. Again, this is our experience with Highland homes.
